Te Haeata - French Pass


There are 2 whare available for whānau and groups to book at Te Haeata – Te Ata Pūao (the top house) and Te Umurangi (the bottom house). There is also a recently renovated ablution block with 2 separate showers and a toilet located just behind Te Umurangi and below Te Ata Pūao.


Te Umurangi

Te Umurangi is the old French Pass school building. Offering a beach and sea view from the open and spacious main room (previously a classroom), this space is ideal for accommodation and wānanga and will sleep up to 20. This room comes with 18 x mattresses, a whiteboard, 2 back benches with 1 sink, and some hooks and shelving for storage. The kitchen/dining room also looks across to the beach and bay and comes complete with dining tables and chairs, fridge/freezer, chest freezer, stove/oven, microwave, toaster, kitchen crockery, and some cookware and utensils. Te Umurangi has 2 internal wharepaku, an additional room (for sleeping or storage) and a corridor that opens out to the outdoor area where the ablution block is located.

Te Ata Pūao

Te Ata Pūao is the old teacher’s residence. Offering stunning views of the bay from the front deck, Te Ata Pūao features 3 double bedrooms, a lounge, kitchen and dining room, a bathroom with a shower and toilet, another separate toilet, and a laundry room. It comes fully furnished with a lounge suite and TV, dining suite, fridge/freezer, stove/oven, microwave, toaster, cookware, crockery and utensils. Te Ata Pūao will comfortably sleep 6, or up to 10 people in 3 double beds, 2 sets of bunk beds and a single bed.

  • A non-refundable booking fee is required within 2 weeks to secure your booking, and will be deducted from the total cost of your stay. Once payment of booking fee is received, your booking request will be processed and confirmed. Late or non-payment of your booking fee may result in your booking being cancelled.
  • The total cost of your total stay will depend on how many are in your group, their ages, and how many nights you book for. You will be advised of the total cost for your stay once your booking is confirmed, and this must be paid in full prior to your arrival. Late or non-payments may affect your ability to use Te Haeata in future.
  • An example of cost during peak season for Ngāti Koata whānau and groups:
    For a whānau/group with 2 tamariki aged 12yrs and under, and 3 others aged 13yrs and over to stay for 2 nights during peak season, the total cost is $300. After the booking fee is paid, balance owing is $200, i.e. 3x guests at $50 each x2 nights – $100 = $200 owing.

Any consideration outside of the above may be sent to the Te Haeata Committee for approval.


  1. Ngāti Koata whānau are given priority for the use Te Haeata.
  2. Holidays and long weekends are reserved for Ngāti Koata whānau and groups only. This includes school holidays, Christmas and New Years, Waitangi Day, Easter, ANZAC, Queens Birthday and Labour Day.
  3. Te Haeata is drug-free.
  4. The water supply is by tank and therefore limited. Please conserve water during your stay at Te Haeata.
  5. PACK IN AND PACK OUT. This means you must take out everything you bring in, including all of your rubbish. There is a 24-hour coin operated skip in Rai Valley. For more info, click here: https://www.marlborough.govt.nz/services/refuse/transfer-stations/rai-valley
  6. There are no clothes-washing facilities so please ensure you take enough clothing/towels etc. to last the duration of your stay.
  7. You need to take your own bedding (sheets, pillows, pillow cases and blankets).
  8. Please leave Te Haeata in the same (or better) shape as you found it. There is a supply of cleaning equipment and products there.
  9. Please be respectful of the local community and other users of the bay. Excessive noise and/or inappropriate behaviour may affect your ability to use Te Haeata in future.
  10. Unless advised otherwise, you can collect the keys from the Webber whare at French Pass.
  11. Please report any property, maintenance, health and safety or cleaning equipment/supply issues to the Trust Office at your earliest convenience.


To book Te Haeata:

1. Click on the date(s) you want to book

2. Complete the booking request form

3. Click ‘send’

You will receive email confirmation that your booking request has been received, and you will be asked to pay the booking fee.

Once your booking fee has been received, your request will be processed and confirmed.
